Gary Kinnane. (Art in Australia. Vol 27, No3, Autumn 1990) Impressions: Doug Wright

My early training was in traditional landscape painting, predominantly in watercolour: Over the years and since working in oil there has been a gradual refinement of those early approaches and a general move towards abstraction and the present 'field' works where the complexity of surface marks creates an atmosphere.

Landscape is never far from my mind when working, however I paint less directly from an actual landscape site than previously. Memory of landscape phenomena, changing seasons and particular unusual situations that occur in the environment have more impact nowadays.

Edges became significant stemming from a painting trip to Italy in 1990. It was there that the current format of edges and boundaries was initiated. In Italy the compositions turned vertical, framed by architectural windows and the common thin Cyprus pines which I used often to frame a central space. I also included ledges and steps at the base and distant horizon at the top. I started experimenting with multiple horizons and introduced metallic colours for the first time. This gave the work a strange luminosity.

I find atmosphere very important in establishing a mood in the work. This can shift subtly from painting to painting by the gradual shift of colours. The complex layered paint surfaces enables me to control the luminosity and translucency of the paint surfaces which in turn alters the atmospheric feel of the work.

Returning from Italy in 1990 I painted an exhibition from the gathered reference material. This resulted in a successful exhibition at David Ellis gallery in Gore Street, Fitzroy. I felt this body of work formed the foundation of works to follow, up to the present.

ubsequent recent trips to the U.K. have also allowed me to study northern hemisphere light and colour sensations, further adding to my experiences of landscape types from which to work.
